God's Big Idea
Bridge To Jerusalem officially opened to travelers in October 2014
The project has 'slowly, slowly' come into being. While the idea for a non-profit has only been a year in the making, God's plan began to emerge over a decade ago when I first went Israel on a tour led by my pastor, Ron Swanson. I thought that was the end of it - a fascinating, once in a lifetime trip to Israel.
My resume goes to Jerusalem
Pastor Ron was headed to Israel once again in 2010. I didn't go on this trip, but my resume did. I asked him to hand it out to anyone who might be interested in having a social worker volunteer at their agency for a few weeks. I had no idea where this simple act would lead. Not only did he meet someone who was interested, but they needed me ASAP.
Be careful what you ask for
Before I knew it, just a few months later I was on my way to Israel carrying two suitcases and a load of fear and trepidation. I had never traveled independently to an international destination. I had only spoken with the agency director once, and briefly over the phone. I didn't know the address of where I was staying or who would be picking me up at the airport. I had no idea about what my social work duties would entail. Basically, I knew nothing. But I went.
A life changing experience - understatement!
My world shifted as I was impacted on every level: professionally, personally, and spiritually. I began to grasp the depth of the riches God has for us. We only need to leave our comfort zone to take the risks and opportunities He provides. I didn't know what would come next but was eager to see God's big idea unfold.Since that time, God has continued to provide opportunities for me to work in Jerusalem and build relationships with the wonderful people there. These trips, in turn, have prepared the way for the next phase of God's big idea: the devlopment and birth of this non-profit: the Bridge To Jerusalem.
