APRIL 17-18-19, 2023

The Medford Public Library, StandWithUs and

Bridge to Jerusalem

are partnering to bring an educational program to Medford, to increase awareness and promote understanding of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.

We are offering a variety of events for those who want to participate in Holocaust remembrance. We have something for everyone, from middle school, up.  Check out the event calendar below, for more details.

ABOUT THE FILMS:

4/17  The Paper Clips Documentary (1 hour 22 min.)

In 1998, the children of Whitwell Middle School in the tiny, rural town of Whitwell, Tennessee, took on an inspiring project. This project was to collect one paper clip for each of the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust and was launched out of their principal’s desire to help her students open their eyes to the diversity of the world beyond their insulated valley. What happened would change the students, their teachers, their families and the entire town forever... and eventually open hearts and minds around the world.

4/18  The Strength to Tell (55 min.)  by Maale School of Film graduates, follows the experiences of a group of “at risk” Jerusalem teenagers, who as part of a drama therapy program are asked to interview the last surviving witnesses of the 1961 Eichmann Trial, and create a play on their stories.

4/19  Rosenzweig Born to Dance (19 min.) by Maale School of Film graduates, tells the story of Avigdor Rosenzweig, a tap dancer. In Auschwitz-Birkenau his dancing saved his life.

Today, he is 88 and lives in a retirement home. When Avigdor, Holocaust survivor, dances on the parquet floor of his room, he laughs until he’s out of breath, and with the last ounce of his strength he pushes his tired feet to do a few more steps. For Avigdor, dancing isn’t a hobby and isn’t therapy. It’s the way to survive.

April 17 events are offered by Diana Nelson MSW, director of Bridge To Jerusalem.

Anguish of Liberation As Reflected In Art

The exhibit will be on display during all our August events.

Please check event listings below for each location and time.

This exhibition features 11 artworks that were created immediately after the liberation and up until 1947. The exhibition attempts to investigate how survivors reacted to the liberation through art. When liberation finally arrived, the survivors found themselves torn between their desire to return to life and their need to face the devastation and mourn. As artist Jakob Zim declared: “I live with the shadow and create with the light.” His evocative words exemplify that for the survivors their choice to paint epitomized their renewed embrace of life. The exhibition is based on the Yad Vashem Art Collection.
